Foreign Flowers Dominate Domestically

CALIFORNIA - California is America's top cut flower producer, But you might be surprised where your flowers come from the next time you buy.

Foreign imports dominate today's flower market, in some cases accounting for ninety percent or more of all U.S. sales. Most of those flowers come from South America.

Even though foreign flowers are dominating the industry California is still bringing in big money. "Currently our production targets for our annual year is anywhere between 6.5 million stems to 7 million blooms a year is what we'll produce out of our facility. Throughout the state of California in 2010, our state represented about 36 million stems of roses for an estimated value of 16 million dollars in state revenue," says Chad Nelson, Sales Manager at Eufloria.

Eufloria is doing as well as it can considering just a few years ago there were about twenty rose growers in the state. That number has been cut in half.
