Temp Workers Hope to Score Full-Time Work at Pro-Am

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - While Sunday marks the end of the 2012 tournament, it also marks the end to hundreds of temporary jobs throughout the area.

While Barry Dowden wouldn't mind meeting Tiger Woods or any of the celebrities at the AT&T Pro-Am, he really wants to become fast friends with the hiring managers in Pebble Beach.

"The unemployment's running out and I'm getting a little nervous," says Dowden.

It's the first time in 45 years, the 61-year-old Seaside man hasn't had a steady job. To top it off, he also supports his handicapped 94-year-old mother.

"She took care of me for 20 years, I'm paying her back," says Dowden.

This story is a similar one. Sixty-year-old Bill Reinhard hasn't worked in three years, and he's worried about health insurance.

"I've had very good references, and know people who know people that if I was 35 I could get the job," says Reinhard.

Both men are hoping to score full-time jobs after temporary work as store greeters at the Pro-Am.

The Pebble Beach company said they hired more than 600 temporary workers just for this week, but the likelihood of them staying and working in these stores is slim.

That's because the pro-am creates more jobs than they normally have. While a Pebble Beach Company spokesperson couldn't give me a number of how many they plan to hire after this week, he said those who work this event have a better chance of getting hired, when they do have opening.

Even if they don't land full-time jobs, both men said putting this experience on their resume is worth it.

"It's enjoyable," says Dowden. "I like golf. It's a good corporation, it's a good company and friendly workers."

The Pebble Beach Company said temporary workers will also be put in their database when they do recruit for jobs or events.
