SEASIDE - Money woes are forcing another Central Coast city to layoff police.
Chief Vicki Myers for Seaside Police said people in the city won't even notice a difference.
That's because the officer was paid for by a county grant and was part of Monterey County's Joint Narcotics Unit, so he spent most of his time in Salinas.
But that money's now gone, so a position that was actually supposed to be cut several years ago will now go away.
"it's unfortunate," she said. "We always like to keep police officers on the street. I'd like to hire more if we could but given the fiscal situation throughout the country very few agencies are able to add to their numbers."
Chief Myers said the department is hiring an administrative analyst, a position that opened when the record supervisor retired.
She said she can't spend that money on an officer instead of an analyst, because the analyst position makes far less, so that's all she can afford to hire.
The police officer makes around $87,000 a year without benefits and the administrative analyst makes about $63,000.
