SALINAS, Calif. -- It's an ordinary chore you do everyday. You get home, check your mail, but when a neighbor in Oak Hills opened up her mailbox, she found something far from ordinary.
"Shocked first of all, she didn't know what to think. She thought it was drugs at first," said Brenndon Simmons.
Brenndon Simmons was with his mom Marsha last night when she opened an envelope. She didn't know who it was from, but knew it was sent from Oklahoma. Inside, she found a bizarre note.
"The note said 50/50 Moe and Me," said Simmons
With the note, there were three small packages the size of a stick of gum.
"A little bit of powder did spill out and that's when she freaked out," said Simmons.
They didn't open the package and immediately called 911. Within moments, police, fire and hazmat crews came to their house on Charter Oak Blvd. The family was evacuated and the neighborhood was blocked off. Investigators called in the health department and the FBI to help in the investigation. After a few hours, they determined the powder wasn't a health risk. Instead, it was chopped up aspirin.
"She's a marriage family counselor, and you know not everybody's happy with counseling I guess but I don't think that she was targeted," said Simmons.
Simmons said his mom is doing just fine now and is back at work. He says they're lucky no one was hurt.
