SALINAS - A domestic violence call turns into a two-hour standoff between Salinas Police and this man.
Rachel Curtis witnessed it all unfold on Saturday at 9 a.m. on Calle Cebu right near the Sun Street Drug Rehab Center.
"It is really scary, because I have a nine-month-old daughter," she said. "I just want her to be safe and to know there's a gun nearby that's just scary."
She watched Salinas Police approach a home on Calle Cebu with their guns drawn and take 68-year-old Donald Negranza into custody.
Officers were called out to his home after receiving a domestic violence disturbance call.
Negranza's wife was out of the house when police showed up, but he wouldn't come out.
Things really heated up when officers walked up to the door and was greeted with a gun in their face.
"He fired multiple rounds inside his residence and then it became a standoff," said Commander Dave Shaw of Salinas Police Department.
Police called in the SWAT team for back-up and neighbors were evacuated.
Negranza finally came out of the house but wouldn't cooperate with police when they asked to see his gun.
He turned to go back in the house. Officers shot him with foam bullets and tackled him.
"We're going to do this the safest we can for our officers and the community," Shaw said.
Negranza was taken to a hospital.
Police said he had a pre-existing heart condition and doctors told them later he had a heart attack during the standoff.
"He's really kept to himself," Curtis said. "I've seen him outside doing yard work. No problems that I'm aware of until this morning."
