Down to Earth: Monarch Butterflies Thriving in Pacific Grove

Posted: Updated:

PACIFIC GROVE- The Central Coast is home to thousands and thousands of butterflies. Pacific Grove is even called "Butterfly Town, USA."

"The citizens here take the butterflies extremely seriously," said Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History Executive Director Lori Mannel. "The monarchs that are in the trees right now were planted by citizens on a management plan from ten years ago."

Caretakers at the sanctuary are in charge of studying everything about the Monarch.

Frances Grate is one of the volunteers. She is helping to test out different plants to see which flowers butterflies like the nectar from best.

A little extra research, for the sanctuary, she hopes will go a long way.

"A lot of people come on a warm day when the sun comes out. The monarchs just strut their stuff and you're in a magical place," said Grate.
