LOMPOC - Time for a school test! This is one test students don't mind taking! This is a taste test!
Thanks to the School Food Initiative through the Orfalea Foundation, healthy school food has arrived on the Central Coast. The question is... Will students eat it?
The School Food team believes students should be invested in the changes and involved in the process of creating the menu.
The idea is, students will choose foods that are better for them if they are exposed to new healthy foods a positive manner.
There is also competition for the student dollar with fast food restaurants down the street. This means the high school food has to be healthy and tasty!
In this test, the Lompoc Food Service Director offered students a new whole grain pasta with bean flour for added protein to see if they like it better than the regular school pasta.
The School Food Initiative is helping schools cook from scratch. School Chefs are creating new school food that looks good and is good for you. It's called 'Stealth Health'. Vegetables are also hidden in the sauce.
Our cameras confirmed, students at Lompoc High School do prefer fresh, real, whole food when given a choice!
It's important positive feed-back about food! Out of 19 student surveys 18 actually preferred the new healthy multi grain pasta.
You can find the high protein pasta with bean flour at many Central Coast stores. Locally, it's sold under the brand name Barilla PLUS. Have your own taste test at home!
