Salinas, Calif. - City Manager Ray Corpuz is already settled in his new office at city hall and says he is ready for the big job ahead.

On his first day, Ray Corpuz is facing three main tasks. The first is finding a new police chief which he hopes to accomplish within 4 months.  Central Coast News asked, what is he looking for in Chief Louis Fetherolf's replacement?

"I think it's extremely beneficial to have something who's intimately involved with the police and law enforcement, and public safety," said Corpuz, who thinks there are very strong internal candidates within the Salinas Police Department.

Not all city council members were on board with hiring Corpuz.  He was elected by a vote of 4-3.  So Central Coast News asked, how does he plan to get the whole council behind him?

"It's not a matter of saying I'm going to be more open to those that supported me verse those that did not. I believe all council members will continue to work together with administration and the city manager to move the city forward," said Corpuz.

Salinas Mayor Donahue said Corpuz was hired highly based on his success in economic development. Central coast news asked with redevelopment funds gone, how does he plan to further develop the city's economy?

"The city has other ways to encourage the private sector and partner. One of the important things we need to do is to work with our sister agencies. One important one is the county of Monterey," said Corpuz.

Corpuz said economic development will be his top priority.

The mayor said Corpuz' experience and success in Seaside and Tacoma, Washington made him the best candidate for the job.
