SALINAS, Calif. - It wasn't a typical call for Monterey County Animal Services. Dozens of rabbits wandering in an open field in Marina, with nobody in sight.
While the sheer number of rabbits seems hard to imagine, Interim Monterey County Animal Services Director Chris LeVanton said, "It's not unheard of...but it's the first history I have heard of this many rabbits being abandoned in Monterey County."
Just this past November, the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter took in 114 rabbits from a breeding facility. One of the hardest adjustments for the shelters in both cases, was housing so many rabbits at one time. LeVanton said it's a difficult transition for the shelter because, "we're just not set up for rabbits."
Temporary cages have been set up, and the rabbits have been separated by sex, to prevent more rabbits, and this weekend they will all be spayed and neutered. After that, Kelly Lehrain of Animal Friends Rescue Project says, "they make wonderful, wonderful pets."
The Monterey Avian and Exotic Clinic will be doing the spay and neuter services free of charge. If you're interested in adopting, or fostering a rabbit, call AFRP at 831-333-0722
