Million Dollar Community Investment: Si Se Puede Learning Center

Posted: Updated:

HOLLISTER, Calif.- Central Coast News believes that to build a stronger community, you must invest in it.

That's why we launched One Million Dollar Community Investment.  Recently, a request was received from Si Se Puede Learning Center.

Its mission: Help children succeed.  Monday, the group honored a man who dedicated his life to helping others achieve unity and success.

A day for kids who never knew him, to learn what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for.  It was also a day of goals for Hollister community groups to keep that message alive.

"This event offers us an opportunity to look into our own backyard and look at the heros and movers and shakers here in our own community," said Emiliano Valdez with Hollister Youth Alliance.

Jessica Gonzalez planned to pass her mentor's message to her three children. She got pregnant at 15 when Reverend Artyss Golden took her in and allowed her to live the dream of going to college.

"I think it's good to have people to look up to and you see these kinds of people and know that there's opportunities other than going the wrong way; there's ways you can do good and it's very possible," said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said community events like the MLK Day of Service are important to let kids know there are places locally to turn for help.

Taking a national hero and making local ones, "They can also do make change and create dreams and also have a dream as well," said Valdez.
