Culinary Boot Camp Comes to Santa Maria

SANTA MARIA -  Hats Off! Culinary Boot Camp comes to Santa Maria thanks to the School Food Initiative!

It's a new year and new healthy school food is being served on the Central Coast.

The Orfalea Foundation through the School Food Initiative is reforming the food in Santa Barbara schools and now the movement comes to Santa Maria!

Food service workers are turning in their box cutters and cooking real food from scratch.

We caught up with one food service worker from Solvang as she runs through the course.

Mom Celi Ribet decided to step out of her own kitchen where she cooks for her three children and start cooking for your children at school.

She and other food service workers are at this five day culinary boot camp in Santa Maria.

Celi is proud to part of the movement to serve food and a lesson about healthy choices.

The Food Service Director received a sweet surprise. Scratch cooking is actually saving the district money! The district saved about 80-thousand dollars just by buying local produce. Big savings that may also save student lives.

More than 300 Central Coast Food Service Workers have been trained at Culinary Boot Camp.

More than 50-thousand children are now enrolled in local schools with scratch cooking.
