Neighbors Say Son Accused of Murder Was Mentally Ill

SALINAS, Calif.- A Salinas piano teacher's disappearance, now a murder investigation.

"The police were over here two months ago, I heard over the fence she was telling the policeman he threatened to kill her," said next door neighbor to the victim, Patrick McLaughlin.

He said he remembers when Janet Sorenson and her son Chris moved into the neighborhood on Atherton Way in Salinas more than 20 years ago.

Sorenson was last seen at her home on the 1600 block of Atherton Way on Dec. 7th.

"For many years they fought with each other, Christopher had a background of schizophrenia which I believe he got from his father, who before the first year was up he moved out of this home here and they have been alone with each other and it just finally came to a head."

Early Friday morning, Monterey police found Chris Sorenson sleeping in his mother's van near Jack's Park in downtown Monterey, after questioning him, Salinas police arrested Sorenson for murdering his mother, even though investigators are still looking for her body.

"Based on the evidence we have gathered in its entirety we believe it's a homicide," said Salinas police Sgt. Henry Gomez.

"I don't think shes going to be found alive, it was just too volatile," said McLaughlin.

Police won't say what they found in Janet's house or her van, but were only alerted to her disappearance Wednesday from neighbors and friends. One of them was Yensenia Gutierrez's parents.

"Last Friday we saw her son out here with her dog...He comes and goes, we rarely ever see him, that's why my parents thought it was weird they saw him here."

Two of Yesenia's sisters took piano lessons from Sorenson, "She's like a saint...she was really sweet."

But McLaughlin wasn't surprised by the arrest, saying anyone that knew the two, knew it was a long time coming, "He just had lost it."
