Lawmakers Grill University of California Over Pepper Spray Use

Posted: Updated:

Sacramento, Calif.- One month after police officers made national headlines for using pepper spray against University of California Davis protestors, today lawmakers demanded some answers.

UC President Mark Yudof and UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi spoke about the right of students to protest to lawmakers.

Katehi said she never authorized pepper spray to be used against protestors, even though she said they violated fire codes.

Yudoff told lawmakers he wants to create a system-wide standard for when and how police could use force.

"One part of me says we've got to be real careful, use minimal force all the time, even when someone is engaged in unlawful conduct, but then you have to be very careful that if you only leave police officers with their blackjacks and their guns, there has to be less lethal force that can be employed to save human life, to preserve human life," said Yudof.

Lawmakers plan to hold another meeting in the spring in hopes to draft new standards for university police.
