SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - On Wednesday night, there were about 30 tents up at San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz despite an evacuation notice from police.
"We aren't going to allow this group of individuals to dictate our timeline or our tactics, we are going to set our own strategy or own timeline and address this issue when we feel it's appropriate to do so and we have the tactical advantage," says Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Steve Clark.
Clark said that's why Wednesday's deadline came and went without police raiding San Lorenzo Park to arrest Occupy protestors, a group the city now considers a nuisance. Central Coast News asked police why set a deadline and not enforce it.
"The park is closed at that point," says Clark. "We also wanted to give individuals the opportunity to leave who voluntarily wanted to leave."
Even though Santa Cruz Police spent the past three days handing out evacuation notices to the group, some Occupy protestors like Charles Collin refuse to leave.
"I'm not trying to get arrested," says Collin. "I'd like to find out what's going on and stand here as long as possible to show some solidarity of the people who are here."
While protestors say they're just trying to get their message out about corporate greed, police have this answer.
"Our message is get out," says Clark. "We are very serious about arresting them. If individuals are intent on a confrontation, we will be more than ready for that confrontation. I would advise them to leave the park and avoid the risk of injury."
