Protestors Barricaded Inside Building in Santa Cruz

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Santa Cruz police say protesters broke into a vacant building, which used to be a bank, on River Street and have barricaded themselves inside.  About 20 protesters are inside the building and nearly a hundred protesters remain outside.

The property owner has asked police to vacate any trespassers, but when officers tried, the situation got hostile.  "There was a lot of everybody banning together and using our common strength to move a couch here or whatever to utilize to inhibit police from rushing in," said Jack Bishop, an "Occupy" protester.

Santa Cruz police say the protesters used couches, file cabinets, and furniture to keep police out.  Both protesters and police say the situation escalated and almost got out of control last night.

Police say they left to keep officers safe and to regroup.  But no one could explain why the protesters splintered from the "Occupy Movement" in San Lorenzo Park or why they chose to invade the building.

The protesters even became aggressive to our cameras.  "Turn the camera off!" protesters yelled as they swarmed around the camera.  No one was arrested when police tried to enter the building. Officers say it's tough to communicate with the protesters because the group's representatives are constantly changing.
