Forged Letter Says Mayor Apologizes to Occupy Protesters

Posted: Updated:

Santa Cruz, Calif.-  Another Occupy Santa Cruz rally comes three days after the city issued the permit to the protesters, telling them they had to leave San Lorenzo Park by November 16th.

Central Coast News found a letter which appears to be written by Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty, apologizing for the permit that  declares the city's decision to dismantle tents and clean up San Lorenzo Park in a week and a half.

"We don't know what the source of that was. We don't even know if it was false.," said Joy Hinz, an Occupy Santa Cruz protester.

The letter circulating this Occupy Santa Cruz protest is basically an apology from the mayor. It reads, "I was playing Farmville on my iphone throughout the secret City Council meeting where this matter was decided." The mayor said this letter was forged and is false.

The mayor said he has never played the game Farmville and he does support the city's decision to issue a permit with strict rules.  Protesters are upset about the permit and said they hoped the letter was real.  It came on city letter head with the mayor's signature.

"It seemed like an appropriate apology for the permit that infringes on our first amendment rights," said Hinz.

While most Occupy protesters are upset about the permit, some understand the city's trying to clean up the drug and alcohol abuse in the Occupy camp.

"I camped out for two weeks. There is drugs and violence, but it is only a few people causing tremendous trouble," said Kathlean Perlin, an Occupy Santa Cruz protester who moved out of camp into a hotel.

Now police, protestors and the city are trying to figure out who forged this letter and what should happen to the people if they're found.
