Great White Shark Attacks Surfer in Marina

MARINA, Calif.--

A 27-year-old man is recovering at a San Jose hospital after being attacked by a great white shark, Saturday.  It happened around 7:15 a.m. at Marina State Beach.

It was supposed to be like any other day of surfing at Marina State Beach for Brandon McKibbin and his friend Eric Tarrantino.

"A wave came and I paddled up and over the wave and when I came over the top, he ( Tarrantino ) just started yelling shark, shark, shark," said McKibbin.

McKibbin said they tried to paddle back to shore as fast as they could, but it was too late.

"He just said, 'call 911.'  At that point, I looked over and he was only a couple feet away from me, and you could see his arm was bleeding pretty badly."

Skip Londos was also getting ready to hit the water Saturday morning when he saw the attack.

"He ( Tarrantino ) was able to paddle in on his own and he ran up the beach right here and stopped right at the bottom of the sand dunes," said Londos.  "And then four or five of us, we're all friends, went down, picked him up and brought him up right where we're filming right here on the sidewalk."

McKibbin said Eric was bitten on the arm and neck by a great white shark.  Central Coast News got a picture of Eric's surfboard and you can see a 19 inch bite mark the shark left behind.  California State Park officials think the shark could be up to 20 feet long.

State Park officials posted signs on beaches from Fort Ord to Moss Landing warning of the attack and urging people to stay out of the water.

"It's likely possible that he isn't anywhere in the area anymore,"  said Dana Jones, California State Parks.  "They do travel fast and it's a big ocean.  But for safety sake, we will be posting all of these beaches and recommend people don't go in the water.

Londos said he's still shocked by what he saw Saturday morning.  "It was upsetting because this is really a popular spot and this has been the second attack in four years.  So it definitely makes you leery."

McKibbin said Tarrantino was last listed in stable condition and is expected to be ok.

California State Park officials said they will be patrolling the beaches for the next week looking for any shark activity in the water.
