SANTA CRUZ- Occupy Santa Cruz is in its third week of protesting. What started as a simple gathering on the steps of the county courthouse has become a full-fledge operation.
"We're a horizontally structured organization essentially and were completely leaderless. The general assembly is what you would call the leader," said Occupy Santa Cruz participant Joe Singer.
The group holds a general assembly meeting every day at 6pm to discuss their next form of action. After each meeting, the participants break off into a dozen different committees. For example, they have a legal department. They have a treasury department to handle the money. They even have a sanitation department in charge of keeping the area clean.
But the protestors Central Coast News spoke with want to make it clear they are not trying to create a new form of government.
"There is organization, but I definitely wouldn't call it a government. We want to be effective. We're not here just camping out willy nilly. We want to be effective and informed and really make a difference in a real way. So we're trying to get all of the resources that we need to do that," said Libby Rembert.
So for many, all of the organization and planning symbolizes how to fix what they think is broken.
"The problem is our representatives of quote "the people" are no longer representing the people," said protestor Ron Rinker.
