Animals On The Loose in South Monterey County

Posted: Updated:

KING CITY- Frank Wolsko is a concerned South County resident. He spends his free time finding homes for rescued dogs in the area.  Now, he's worried because the city cut animal control operations.

"I'm extremely frustrated," said Wolsko. "It's a public safety issue in my opinion, and without them, we're going to have an explosion of animals."

The city laid off its only animal control officer a year ago. As of October 1st, the local veterinary clinic lost funding to house stray animals. A service it provided, through the city, for almost a decade.

"There's going to be a lot more stray cats out there a year from now than there is today. Some of them are going to be hit by cars. If there's a viscous animal out there, it's going to end up biting somebody," said veterinarian Timothy Cheney.

Dr. Cheney said he gets multiple calls a day from people asking where they should take pets they find without a collar. Cheney directs them to city police, but they say they don't have a responsibility for the stray animals either.

City manager Michael Powers did not have time to make full comment today, but did say the city's working to figure out different animal control services.
