Q: Why Doesn't CHP Place Empty Patrol Cars on Highways?

Posted: Updated:

A: Our KION Question came from Patric in Salinas.

He asked, "Has the California Highway Patrol ever thought of parking an empty patrol car on the highway to slow down drivers who are speeding?"

Here is the response from the California Highway Patrol:

While it would certainly pose as a deterrent for some motorists, it can also be a distraction for others, whose reactions to seeing a patrol car might affect the smooth flow of traffic; In addition to the calls our dispatch center might receive inquiring on the welfare of the unseen officer.

Our resources are best used in active enforcement and utilizing officers to observe and take action against violators when necessary.
