Each year, the volunteer organization "Save Our Shores" works over 20,000 hours to prevent more than 38,000 pounds of trash from entering the Monterey Bay Sanctuary.
Now, the organization is looking to fight a bigger battle. They're hoping to pass a ban on styrofoam food containers in Salinas. The organization will be heading to the Salinas City Council meeting tonight to voice their concerns tonight.
Central Coast News spoke with the Executive Director of "Save Our Shores", Laura Kasa, this morning about the upcoming council meeting.
Kasa says a ban on styrofoam in Salinas is crucial because it's one of the biggest Central Coast cities.
"All the surrounding cities have done it," Kasa syas, "Carmel began the ban back in 1989. We've seen the decrease in styrofoam on the beaches so we know the ban works."
For three weeks, Kasa as well as other volunteers from "Save Our Shores" have gone to local businesses around Salinas to help spread the word about the ban.
"We have a lot of restaurants saying they'll support it which will help," Kasa says.
If you would like to attend the meeting, it'll be held at City Hall on Lincoln Avenue beginning at 4:00 pm today.
