Central Coast News KION/KCBAQ: Up Next, La Nina or El Nino?

Q: Up Next, La Nina or El Nino?

Posted: Updated:

A: Mike in Carmel Valley asked, "Any indication as to what we will be looking at for weather this winter? El Nino, La Nina?"

Here is Chief Meteorologist Norm Hoffmann with the answer.

We have just come out of a La Nina which is cooler than normal water in the tropical pacific. It is unlikely we will go back into a La Nina this year. It is also unlikely we will go directly into an El Nino, because we came out of an El Nino 2 year ago and into a La Nina last year.

The outlook for the Climate Prediction Center of the National Weather Service says we will not be in El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Neutral which means normal temperatures in the Tropical Pacific.

So rainfall for us (The Central Coast) should be near normal. However with this weather pattern we are currently in, I would think we will have a dry fall and a normal winter for rainfall and temperature.

That is the way it looks right now. Thanks for your question and I hope that helps.
