SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- The Santa Cruz Police Department's Street Crimes Unit served a search warrant at "Good Guys Diesel and Bio-Mechanics" Thursday.

Police said they acted on tips from the neighborhood about the suspected illegal marijuana grow operation. The street crimes team obtained a marijuana cultivation search warrant for the business.

Officers discovered a full-scale, illegal marijuana cultivation operation housed inside the business. Approximately 100 plants were seized along with approximately 20 pounds of processed and dried marijuana product. Officers found sophisticated growing equipment to include grow lights, ventilation systems and a drying room. The facility had the potential to produce at higher volumes as it appears the search caught the operation in mid-harvest.

This growing operation borders a quiet residential neighborhood. It is only one block from a public middle school and a few hundred feet from a daycare facility on Water Street.

Although employees of the business claimed the marijuana growing operation was separate from the Diesel and Bio-Mechanics business, Officers found evidence tying the two operations together through the business owner. Officers are attempting to locate the business owner, and are continuing the investigation to include financial records. Two people were detained at the business, but were released pending further investigation.

Because of illegal construction and electrical wiring violations, the building was "red-tagged" by the city's Code Compliance Specialists.
