Ag Report: Thousands Of Pounds Of Lettuce for the Needy

Posted: Updated:

CASTROVILLE, Calif - Its a practice that's been around since biblical times, and yet, one local organization says many people still don't know what it means.

Its called gleaning, and its a practice where volunteers gather food left behind on fields after the harvest, to give to the needy.

AG Against Hunger held a gleaning today in Castroville at Boggiatto Producer on Rogers and Espinoza Road.

80 people showed up to help the hungry. After three hours of working around the field, they collected close to 5,000 pounds of romaine lettuce.

The organization said while the food is left behind by farm workers, it's still very good quality.

"Grocery stores are really picky, so sometimes its because of the wrong size," said Karen DeWitt, Executive Director of Ag Against Hunger. "Maybe the coloflower isn't exactly white enough, some small cosmetic reason, but its beautiful produce, we get excellent produce."

This isn't the last gleaning either. The next event will be held on July 9th.
