Q: Are Radar Detectors Installed on Vehicles Illegal?

Posted: Updated:

A: Our KION Question came from Joe in Salinas.  He asked us, "Are radar detectors installed on vehicles illegal?"

Robert Lehman from the California Highway Patrol Office said, "It is not illegal to possess a radar detector."

However, according to CHP, there is law against possessing a radar jamming device.  Here is an excerpt of the vehicle code:

28150. (a) No vehicle shall be equipped with any device that is designed for, or is capable of, jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or otherwise interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of moving objects.
