Q: Why Do Ambulances And Fire Engines Both Respond?

Posted: Updated:

A: Diana from Monterey was curious and asked, "when you call 911, how come a fire engine and an ambulance both respond?"

According to Monterey County dispatch, it depends on the phone call, but usually medical and accident calls require both. The engine or the ambulance may eventually cancel the other out. But officials told Central Coast News, more help is better than less help. There is a paramedic on board fire engines. American Medical Response said yes, both an engine and ambulance will usually respond to most calls, except in some isolated areas where there might only be a volunteer fire department, and in that case, police will also respond.
