HOLLISTER, Calif- New homes energized by the sun but you don't have to shell out millions. It's something low income families can afford.
"We're doing this with the help of volunteers, job trainees, as well as the home owners themselves to actually get up on the roof tops and make solar happen for families that wouldn't be able to afford it," said Steven Fernandez with GRID Alternatives.
Dozens of people are building 25 homes on Bridge Vale in south Hollister. They will also install solar panels, something you probably don't expect at low income housing projects.
"It costs anywhere around $20,000 for this size house. We're actually doing it at about 95% reduction costs to the homeowners," said Fernandez.
A couple of non profit organizations are able to offer the solar panels because to live there, you have to help build your home. Students from a training program in Gilroy are also pitching in.
The majority of the people building the homes and putting up those solar panels aren't getting paid
but they say they don't mind because it's the experience they're getting that's important to them.
German Vargas is a student. He explained why he's doing it even though he won't live here. "I lost houses, I lost a good job. That's why I took a break to take my training. Yhey give me the opportunity to get a better job"
Families are required to work 40 hours a week at the construction site but everyone involved calls it a win win situation.
