Local 6th Graders Create Magazine for Girls

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif- Some enterprising young girls from Santa Cruz have created a new magazine called Tangerine Moon.

Tangerine Moon was created by the group of 6th grade girls as way for them to "hang out with friends from an intellectual standpoint," said Kelly McCandless.

The idea started out as a weekly writers workshop. With a group of such talented young girls they quickly decided that they wanted to do a more collaborative project that would combine all of their skills.

The girls decided that a magazine with a focus on community aimed at girls 9-14 was they best way to go.

The magazine features teen fashion, healthy recipes, and book recommendations. But not to be outdone by some larger magazines on the stands, the girls also have quizzes and an advice column.

They printed their winter edition in January 2011 but used that first printing as a trial run. When they decided to sell the spring edition of the magazine commercially, Bookshop Santa Cruz picked it up to sell at their store.

The girls are looking to print a summer edition of Tangerine Moon in late July. Click here to find Tangerine Moon on Facebook.

Tangerine Moon is written, created, and published by: Kelly McCandless, Sophie McCallum, Maggie O'Hara, Athena Greenleaf, Morgan Eidam, and Gina Condotti.
