Is an article titled "Know when you've outgrown the uniform" written about the attack on a Giants fan at Dodger stadium in poor taste? Some are saying yes, but on his personal blog, the writer is defending his actions.
In the original article written by John Steigerwald he wrote, "Maybe someone can ask Stow, if he ever comes out of his coma, why he thought it was a good idea to wear Giants' gear to a Dodgers' home opener."
It was probably this sentence that got most people riled up. Comments left on the article equate this with blaming a girl who wore a short skirt for getting raped. In his defense Steigerwald wrote that he was not saying Stow deserved it, "To say that Stow's decision to wear the Giants jersey resulted in his beating is not the same as blaming him or saying that he had it coming."
Steigerwald also trashed sports fans who wear their team's jersey to the game. "Here's tip for you if you actually think that wearing your team's jersey makes you a part of the team: It doesn't."
Steigerwald is an independent columnist and writes a Sunday column for the Observer-Reporter.
