SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - The Scotts Valley man brutally attacked at a Dodgers game is 42-year-old Bryan Stow and works as a paramedic. People in Scotts Valley who knew the Giants fan are stunned by the news.
"You don't expect it to happen to somebody you know," says Stow's friend Garrett Grigg. "It's a small town."
Grigg is Stow's friend and worked with him at the Scotts Valley Fire District for five years. On Friday, he was shocked to learn Stow was attacked. He said it couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
"Hardworker, he didn't deserve it," says Grigg. "No one deserves to be beat up and hit that hard in the head."
And he's sad he couldn't come to his friend's defense.
"Supposedly, there was a lot of eyewitnesses," says Grigg. "For nobody to jump in and actually not do anything about it or follow anybody is sad."
On Thursday night, Los Angeles Police said two men wearing Dodgers clothing beat and critically injured Stow in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after the opening day game. Stow was with two other people all wearing Giants gear.
Police said they were followed and the attackers said slurs against the Giants and began kicking and punching them. Now, Stow is the hospital with a head injury.
Captain John Gambello doesn't understand why someone who helped save others would be targeted.
"He would come in and train and be ready to respond to a call," says Gambello. "He gave of himself and when guys do that you have to tip your hat to them."
Now, the firefighters are left wanting answers.
"The biggest thing is why?," says Grigg. "Why do you have so much anger? It's baseball. It's America's pastime. Let people play."
Stow still lives in Scotts Valley and he has two kids. His family is from Santa Cruz County. Many of them have gone down to Los Angeles to be with him. So far, police have not arrested anyone.
