Airport Security Preps For Thanksgiving Travel

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. - Officials at the Monterey Peninsula Airport are preparing for big crowds of travelers during the Thanksgiving week.

Larry Lawhoin, a transportation security officer, said not only are airports dealing with more-than-usual travel, many times those traveling aren't frequent flyers. "And they're not up to snuff on the policies we have."

Lawhoin has seen it all during his time as a security officer. "People have tried carrying on a grenade, pepper spray, bullets," he said.

More often, however, travelers don't realize large liquid and gel items are prohibited, like hairspray and shaving cream. "They're only allowed in carry-on bags if they're in less than 3.4 ounce containers and they all fit in one quart-sized plastic bag," added Lawhoin.

Lawhoin said holiday food is also popular as carry-on items during Thanksgiving travel. "Pies and other non-liquid food is fine, but if it pours or spreads, it's prohibited," described Lawhoin.

Travelers should also note the Transportation Security Administration has implemented a new a "secure flight" policy.  "Which ever name on your driver's license should be the same exact information that you use in order to book your ticket," said RJ Rivera, Transportation Security Manager at the Monterey Peninsula Airport, "Both names need to match otherwise you will be delayed," he added.
