MONTEREY, Cali. - The district says it needs to cut millions of dollars from the budget, and wants all students to have the same opportunity to succeed. The district thinks closing Bay View Elementary School is the best option, but a lot of parents don't agree.
Josie Steighman is one of many parents who interrupted tonight's meeting. She has three kids attending Bay View Elementary and is disappointed the school could possible close next year.
"It’s frustrating because you ask questions and they give you pad answers and then they say oh we’ll get back to you,” says Josie Steighman.
District superintendent Marrilyn Sheppard says they've done a lot of research and is doing what's best for the kids.
"This is not a happy thing to do for anybody. Nobody wants to do this, but we’re in another time. I just want them to look at the big picture. We have to be careful and make sure that all our decisions is going to benefit all our students," says Marrilyn Sheppard.
After Sheppard tried to hold the meeting together, another parent stepped in. Sharon Albert says it's hard to watch someone disrespect the administration after working hard on planning a scenario.
"These are tough decisions and I just felt it was disrupting the process and someone needed to stand up and speak out for the community," says Sharon Albert.
