SALINAS, Calif. - As the anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake approaches, the Office of Emergency Services reminds Californians to prepare for the next "big one."
OES recommends having an "emergency kit" you can grab in the event of an earthquake. In it, the following items should be included:
- Water. OES advises having enough water to last three days, which is approximately at three gallons per person.
- Food. Non-perishables, such as freeze-dried or canned food will work. However, food rations specifically designed for emergency situations are also available at stores like Costco.
- Flashlight with extra batteries. Light sticks can also act as a back-up to flashlights.
- Blankets.
- Extra Clothing
- First Aid Kit
- Protective gear, such as a poncho and dust mask.
- Pet supplies. OES says don't forget to include pet food, water and a leash in emergency kits. Also, make sure each pet's ID tags are up-to-date in case they should become separated from you.
