SAN LUIS OBISPO - A major quake can strike at any moment. You might be out on the open road, when the ground starts shaking.

There are things you can do to get through the experience safely.

If an earthquake strikes while you are driving, members of the American Red Cross suggest pulling over to the side of the road and just waiting for the earthquake to pass.

"Try to pull over, not under a tree, or an overpass, if you're on a bridge try not to stay on it, keep driving... And stay in your car and make sure there's not a light pole or a tree that could fall on your car, and wait it out," said Carolyn Jo, American Red Cross.

The Red Cross also recommends keeping an emergency supply kit in the back of your car, with everything you need in case you're stuck on the side of the road for several hours.
