The swine flu is still a major concern for lots of people across the Central Coast. It seems like every day there is something else coming out about the H1N1 virus. You might not believe what Central Coast News found out today, some parents are considering exposing their children to the disease now to prevent serious illness. There is even talk of swine flu parties.
Natalie Mohtashami would do just about anything to keep her daughter healthy, "We were supposed to go to Dallas last weekend but my friend's daughter had swine flu so we opted not to go," said Mohtashami.
But online there are actually parents talking about increasing the risk of exposeure. In fact swine flu parties are such a hot topic, the CDC has received dozens of questions about them. They are social events where people gather with someone infected by the swine flu. There is no hand sanitizer and guests share drinks.
The parents involved in the parties think it's better to let their kids deal with the swine flu now, when it's mild rather than later in the flu season when it could be more serious.
"I would say it' is an irresponsible approach to safeguarding your child. It certainly could become more virulent in the future but there are deaths now due to this influenza strain," said Doctor Janice Zimmerman.
The CDC recommends anyone with flu like symptoms to avoid contact with others and it's not supporting the idea of swine flu parties.
