State Beaches Could Close Due to Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:

If you enjoy California's State Parks, you might be relieved to know fewer will close than anticipated.

Deep budget cuts had state officials considering closing as many as 100 parks. However, the Governor's office is now saying that it will still have to close some parks, but not as many as originally planned.

The list of which parks will be affected has yet to be released and that is because park officials say they're still analyzing individual park budgets.

"I think the decision from their point of view was let's re-look at this. Just in case there's something else going on here that might help us uh, make the list smaller. So we announce fewer parks closing," said Roy Strearns with the Department of Parks and Recreations.

As for the Central Coast, the district superintendent for Monterey County's state parks says he's been instructed to look at each park as a business. He's trying to determine which parks are more profitable than others and where he could make some cuts.

He says most state parks that include campgrounds are profitable, like Big Sur and Point Lomos. Those that might see more cuts because they don't make money are state beaches lke the ones in the northern part of Monterey County
