MONTEREY, Calif- City officials don't know if a large wooden cross that was cut down by vandals over the weekend will be replaced.

It had stood for decades on the recreation trail just south of the Best Western Hotel near Roberts State Beach.

"I didn't even see it until I came over the hill and I saw it lying on the ground I just wanted to start crying" saind Tammy Gerry.

On Monday, it was determined that the cross sat on Monterey city property, despite being located next to a state beach in the city of Seaside.  Monterey City Manager Fred Cohn said it's still not known who actually owned the cross; it is currently sitting in city storage.

Monterey police Lt. Randy Roach said the cross was cut down with a power saw Friday night or early Saturday morning. Witnesses reported seeing empty alcohol containers nearby.  Police estimate the damage at $1,000.

"You see it on the ground and it's just an awful thing. I just hope they find the person and he has to pay for it one way or another," said Ken Myers.

The cross was a recent subject of one of our KIONquestions. It was erected in 1969 as part of Monterey's Bi-Centennial celebration. It's a replica of a cross put up about 240 years ago by Spanish explorer Gaspar De Portola, which served as a way to mark the area for future expeditions.
