SALINAS, Calif. - Law enforcement agencies throughout Monterey County will be in full force this Labor Day weekend on the lookout for drunk drivers as part of the Avoid the 18 program.
Police arrested 33 DUI suspects during last year's Labor Day Weekend crackdown. No deaths caused by impaired drivers were recorded.
Avoid the 18, named after the number of law enforcement agencies in the county, plans in-city DUI patrols and CHP freeway saturation for the Labor Day weekend.
"It's the last long weekend of the summer, so folks will want to go to a picnic or a party and let off steam before everyone has to go back to school, work and reality."
King City and Monterey CHP squads will assign nearly all their available officers to the road for the weekend, said Monterey CHP Officer Brian Wiest.
Lynn comments that local residents "might want to avoid driving up to San Francisco all weekend because the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be closed for renovation and traffic will be a nightmare."
Avoid the 18 is part of a nationwide summer DUI prevention effort sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which funds Avoid the 18 through that organization.
Officers hit the roads again for a 17-day campaign starting Dec. 18.
