Experienced Diver Drowns in Monterey Bay

Posted: Updated:

Carmel, Calif- Fifteen divers have passed away in Monterey County since 2004.  Thursday Correy Fedor died 500 yards of the shore line at Monastery Beach in Carmel. According to the Monterey County Sheriffs Department it was a tragic accident. "Coroners investigators conducted an autopsy today and the cause of death was determined to be drowning, but what we don't know is why he drown," said Commander Mike Richards.

Correy was an experienced technical diver. He worked as an instructor at the Monterey Bay Aquarium back in 2007. So what could go so terribly wrong? "We're going to do some more investigation into the tanks, the dive computer other evidence we have to try to determine what happened," said Richards.

Keith McNutt manages Bamboo Reef Dive shop on the peninsula. He says technical divers like Correy are far more advanced than the average recreational divers, "They're very very very prepared and confident divers to do that type of diving that they do. As far as what happens who knows," said McNutt.

McNutt says there are dozens of scenarios that could have happened out in the water leading up to Correy's death. He hopes when the investigation is done, something positive can come from this loss, "Accidents do happen and perhaps one day soon we can find out. It's good if we can get this information back into the diving community. We can put it out there and all learn from perhaps if there were mistakes made or anything like that," said McNutt.

For people who might be hesitant to give scuba driving a try, McNutt says, its one of the best experiences of your life, "I don't really consider it a dangerous sport, it's like anything else in fact you are actually much safer once you're trained and do everything properly. You are actually much safer out in the water than driving on Lighthouse or Highway 1," said McNutt.
