Defending Tour de France champion Chris Froome has given up on his repeat bid after crashing at least twice in Wednesday's fifth stage, according to the race's official Twitter account.
Froome's crashes on Wednesday's route from Ypres, Belgium, to an area in northern France came a day after he injured his wrist in a crash in Stage 4.
The Kenyan-born Briton fell 29 kilometers into Wednesday's 152-kilometer stage before crashing again -- and giving up, apparently injured -- at 85 kilometers, the event's website said.
Froome fell on his wrist during a crash Tuesday between Le Touquet and Lille but was cleared to continue racing, he said Tuesday night.
"The wrist is painful and it's certainly not ideal going into tomorrow's cobbled stage, but I have a great team around me and we'll get through the next few days as best we can," he said Tuesday night, according to the event's website.
