Jacksonville rookie quarterback Blake Bortles, the third pick in the NFL Draft, completed 7 of 11 passes in his exhibition debut, as the Jaguars beat visiting Tampa Bay 16-10 on Friday night.
Chad Henne started at quarterback for the Jaguars, playing four possessions that didn't result in any points. Bortles didn't have a touchdown pass, but showed his big arm and willingness to drive the ball down field, completing passes of 24 and 31 yards. He was not intercepted.
The winning points came with 6:27 left as running back Denard Robinson, a former Michigan quarterback, scored on a 23-yard run. With extra time available because Toby Gerhart (hip) did not play, Robinson led Jacksonville in rushing with 36 yards on seven carries.
Falcons 16, Dolphins 10
Quarterback Matt Ryan completed all seven of his passes and led a touchdown drive in his only possession as Atlanta held off visiting Miami in the exhibition opener for both teams.
Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill also went one possession, going 6-for-6 for 62 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown to Brandon Gibson. Miami rookie quarterback Seth Lobato fumbled a shotgun snap deep in Atlanta territory late in the game, with the ball recovered by defensive end Nosa Eguae at the Falcons 15 with 2:25 left.
Bills 20, Panthers 18
Buffalo's Anthony Dixon ran for a touchdown, and EJ Manuel completed 9 of 13 passes for 96 yards, as the Bills held off Carolina in Charlotte, N.C.
Cam Newton (ankle) did not play for the Panthers, who got a 32-yard touchdown reception from first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin, a receiver from Florida State. Carolina's Joe Webb connected with Brandon Williams on a 31-yard score with 1:37 to go in the game, but a two-point conversion pass attempt failed.
