Saving water: Tips for conservation257057822014-04-29T00:27:43Z2014-04-29T00:27:43Z

As the city of Santa Cruz prepares to implement water rationing on May 1 and the state remains in a state of severe drought, officials are offering a number of tips for residents on how to conserve water.

Turn off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving
Keep showers to 5 minutes and install flow restricting shower headsFix all plumbing leaks Run dishwashers and clothes washers only when fullSweep paved areas instead of washing with a hoseUtilize Santa Cruz city rebates to replace toilets, washing machines and turf. Consider buying a Watersense Ultra High Efficiency toilet, which uses 1 gallon or less per flush. ($150 rebate). When replacing your washing machine, choose a high efficiency, energy star labeled model ($100 rebate).Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket for garbage or disposing of outdated medications.Properly repair and set irrigation systems to avoid run-offWater at night or during the cool parts of the day and don’t water if it is raining.Attach a shut-off nozzle to your hose. They are free from the city's water conservation office.Collect shower water with a bucket while waiting for it it to heat up and use it to water your plants.Apply two to three inches of mulch to retain moisture in the soil and prevent weeds.Adjust your watering schedule with the weather and season. Cut your watering times in half during the fall and turn your timer off in the winter.Mow grasses higher, at 3 or 4 inches, to reduce water loss and promote healthy roots.Check your sprinkler system for leaks and breaks regularly. Make sure sprinklers are pointed at the plants and water is not running to waste.Don't assume your plants need water. Check the soil moisture first using a soil probe or screw driver.Hand water or manually turn on irrigation valves rather than relying on an automatic timer.Select water-conserving plants which only need periodic watering when established.
Remove lawn that is not serving a functional purpose. Rebates are available from the city of Santa Cruz. Consider supplementing your irrigation with a rainwater catchment system or greywater.

Monterey County has adopted a voluntary water conservation resolution this week, which includes water reduction goals for county staff and departments.

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution encouraging all county staff and other entities to voluntary cut their water use by 20 percent -- unless stricter restrictions already exist in their respective community.

The county plans to cut its water use by 20 percent through outreach and education among its 4,500 employees as well as reducing irrigation and outdoor water use at county buildings and parks.

The water resolution also urges the community to follow conservation practices including:

Proper repair and setting of irrigation systems to avoid run-off
Watering at night or during the cool parts of the day and don’t water if it is raining
Fix all plumbing leaks
Turn off the tap when brushing teeth or shaving
Keep showers to 5 minutes and install flow restricting shower heads
Installation of low flush toilets
Run dishwashers and clothes washers only when full
Sweep paved areas instead of washing with a hose
The county’s Office of Emergency Services has developed a drought conservation webpage filled with conservation, weather and assistance information.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has designated almost all of Monterey County as a “D-4 Exceptional Drought” region, the most severe designation possible.
2014-04-25T07:00:00ZDear Jon: Jet lag can be largely avoidedJon K. Brent237610762014-01-21T00:57:52Z2014-01-21T00:57:52Z

Whether you're traveling home after the holidays or embarking on a new journey across time zones, playing catch-up with your body clock is tough. Molly emailed me and asks, "Dear Jon, help! I'm jet lagged. What can I do about it?" My source tells me when you travel by air, it can take one day to recover for every time zone that you pass through.

So if you fly from New York to California, that's three time zones. From San Francisco to London, that's eight time zones. Whether its three or eight time zones, that is some serious jet lag. Here's some advice that I received from Joan and Lydia Wilen, who are known for the everyday suggestions to life's challenges.

If you want to get over jet lag quicker, as soon as you board the plane, pretend it's whatever time it actually is at your destination. In other words, if you board the plane at 6 p.m. here in California and you're headed for Madrid, Spain, where it's 3 a.m., pull down your window shade, make it as dark as possible and try to go to sleep.

If you board a plane late at night and it's already daylight at your destination, force yourself to stay awake during the flight. Making believe that you're already in the new time zone at the very start of your trip should help you acclimate more quickly.

This seems like common sense, but you have to be disciplined and do some clock watching to get the timing right.
