State wildlife officials captured rare images of a wolverine in the Uinta Mountains.

Trail cameras snapped the pictures in February, but the cameras were not retrieved until later this spring.

A wolverine has not been spotted in Utah in more than 30 years.

The discovery has state wildlife officials excited.

This just shows that we still have a habitat for them to make a comeback,” said Kim Hersey of the Division of Wildlife Resources.

This is the first documented sighting in Utah since a wolverine carcass was found in 1979.

Biologists plan to compare these images with pictures of a wolverine spotted in Wyoming to determine whether or not it's the same animal.
