SALINAS, Calif. - -

UPDATE 8/30/16 6:45 AM: The Salinas Police Department has identified the victim of Friday's shooting as 37-year-old Guillermo Prieto. Prieto was a resident of Salinas.

He was shot and killed while retrieving something from his car in the 700 block of Garner Ave.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 37 year old man on Garner Avenue Friday night.

This marks the city's 25th homicide this year.

After standing outside with a friend, the victim had walked to his car parked on the 700 block of Garner Avenue to retrieve an item when, according to police, he was approached by at least two men.

For unknown reasons, the suspects pulled out handguns and fired several rounds at the victim and then either ran off or got away in a vehicle, according to the Salinas Police Dept. in a press release issued this morning.

Police say the Hispanic male victim is a Salinas resident who appears to be a labor worker and has a "very limited history" with the department and was not a gang member.

"Although the way this shooting occurred is consistent with a gang related shooting, it is too early in the investigation to determine why the victim was killed," according to the SPD press release.

Salinas' 24th homicide happened five days ago when a 27 year old man was found shot in his car in the area of East Lake and Bridge Street.
