SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -

A Santa Cruz boy was reunited with his bike the same day it was stolen after police got a call from an alert citizen.

Police said someone saw a bike that appeared abandoned and out of place in a neighborhood Monday so that person called the Santa Cruz Police Department to report it.

Santa Cruz police officers recovered the bike and discovered it had been stolen from a young boy earlier that morning.

Police were able to track down the license number in the online Bike Registration program and return the bike to its owner.

Police urge people to remember to lock up their bike at all times and also register it with SCPD’s Online Bicycle Registration program. For more information on the program go to http://www.cityofsantacruz.com/departments/police/bicycle-license-registration
