SALINAS, Calif. -

Hours after video and photos of a man were released to the public following allegations the man tried to lure a boy into a bathroom stall at Northridge Mall Monday, a Monterey County probation officer recognized the suspect as a registered sex offender.

Salinas police said citizens also called in with tips about Kevin Rodney Gray, 34, identifying him.

Police said Gray arrived at the department stating he knew police were wanting to talk to him. He was taken into custody and later taken to the Monterey County jail on molestation charges and a violation of probation.

Gray is currently on probation for a similar offense involving children.

Salinas police said a man tried to lure an 8-year-old boy into a bathroom stall at Northridge Mall Monday night.

The child told police he entered the bathroom at the mall just before 8 p.m. and was contacted by the man who was standing in one of the stalls with the door open. The man asked the child his age, and then attempted to get him to come into the stall with him.

The boy ran out of the bathroom and told his mother what happened. The mother, who was waiting outside the bathroom, confronted the suspect but he fled before security could be notified.

Security camera footage showed the man crossing North Main in an easterly direction. The boy was not injured.

The suspect was described as a white man, roughly 25 years old, about 6'1" and 200 pounds with blonde hair. He was wearing a black and yellow hooded sweatshirt with the "Batman" logo on it and a black T-shirt with the same logo, black shorts, white socks and black shoes.

The Salinas Police Department worked closely with Northridge Security to determine the suspect's movements at the mall.

The department is asking for the public's assistance. Contact Detective Kristine Fairbanks at 758-7322 or call the tipline at 775-4222 or We-Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME.
