#PositiveLocalNews: NPS And DLI Students Tutor Central Coast Youth
Free Tutoring Sessions Every Saturday For The Last 15 Years
Murmurs and the sound of pencils scratching the surface of the paper: that's about as loud as it gets at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) on Saturdays.
"It gives you an early start and it'll help you get better at whatever you need to practice on," said 9-year-old Jaymie Jimenez.
Jimenez, along with students from across the central coast, meets at NPS every weekend for "Breakfast for Your Brain,"a free tutoring session from NPS and Defense Language Institute students.
The main things Breakfast for Your Brain strives to do is provide one-on-one experience for the students that they may not get at home or in the classroom, give them confidence in school so that they're not afraid to know the answer and excel all the way to college.
It's been around for 15 years and mechanical engineering student Yemi Seriki has been running the show since last August.
"We've actually seen an increase in students," he said. "Students coming from as far as Gonzalez to get some of this tutoring, so I've definitely seen the program grow."
Jimenez said she's seen herself grow, too.
"I've been doing a lot better, I've been getting straight As," she said.
Seriki said he wants to expand the program, reaching beyond just Saturdays so students can develop a personal relationship with their tutors.
