SALINAS, Calif. -

More than a thousand youngsters are putting away their baseball gloves and bats.

The Salinas Police Activities League’s Junior Giants program ended its season this weekend. The league draws boys and girls from throughout the Central Coast. The coaches are Salinas Police officers.

The goal of the program is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community.

'It's an entire community that's getting together,” said Angel Gonzales from the Salinas Police Department. “We have a police officer here, we've got folks that work for the fire department, folks that work for the city. And then, just a lot of really involved parents. It's amazing to see the stands filled every single game day. We're really proud of this organization and what we've been able to accomplish."

This is the 22nd season for the league. Next year, they plan to do it again.
