BIG SUR, Calif. -

Rescue crews pulled a man to safety after he became stranded on a steep cliff at Julia Pfeiffer-Burns State Park. According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, the hiker entered the park which is closed due to the Soberanes Fire.

The man, whose name has not been released, tried to climb down a 200 foot cliff to the beach below. It was a bad idea. The cliff was too steep and the ground was unstable. He couldn’t reach the beach or climb out safely. Access to the beach is prohibited even when the park is open.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team, Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and California State Park Rangers used a rope and harness to pull the man back up the cliff.

The hiker was cited for entering a closed park and a closed area by the California State Park Rangers.
