GREENFIELD, Calif. -

A broken pipe near Calaveras Way in Greenfield has been leaking water since Sunday night, city officials said.

Greenfield city officials estimate its leaking some 200 to 300 gallons of water per hour.

In a time when the entire state is experiencing a major drought, this waste of water is particularly concerning.

City officials say they can't start working to repair it until Friday when representatives can make sure they aren't at risk of hitting a utility line.

Under federal laws, homeowners and professional excavators alike are required to call the national "Call Before You Dig" number, 811, to ensure they don't unintentionally hit underground utility lines while digging.
